There are three main reasons why an exact equivalence or effect is difficult to achieve. The principle that a translation should have an equivalence relation with the source language text is problematic. This equivalence relation is generally considered the most salient feature of a quality translation. This notion of 'sameness' is often understood as an equivalence relation between the source and target texts. The definitions of translation suggested above imply that producing the same meaning or message in the target language text as intended by the original author is the main objective of a translator. The term 'translation' used and discussed throughout this paper is confined to the written language, and refers to both the product and process of translating. the translated text), and 3) translation: the abstract concept which encompasses both the process of translating and the product of that process Bell (1991: 13). If confined to a written language, translation is a cover term with three distinguishable meanings: 1) translating, the process (to translate the activity rather than the tangible object), 2) a translation: the product of the process of translating (e.g. Professionally, however, the term translation is confined to the written, and the term interpretation to the spoken (Newmark, 1991: 35). Oh, and what is the role of creativity and talent? It adds value to the customer, increasing the value margin. What we need to understand, as translators, is this – we must charge less than the customer values our work at in other words to get the kind of customer we can afford to accept work from. Let us not forget the customer’s costs include indirect costs of managing their own client expectations, finding us, managing the project with us, proofing our work, getting paid and associated risks. Of course customers shop around, to try and get an even bigger value margin. The bigger the gap between value and price, the better our value margin. Only if the value is sufficiently greater than the price do we feel like buying. When we, as customers, are asked to pay for something, we weigh up its value to us, minus the price. The customer does not really care about the supplier's need to cover their costs. We price in terms of volume, and/or time. If we have no alternative but to take the proposed work, the inconvenience costs reduce to zero.Īs translators we want to meet these three costs, and add a profit margin on top. Let us call these the inconvenience costs of taking on the work. Thirdly, there are the ‘lost opportunity’ costs of our not doing something else, something more lucrative, or more enjoyable (or both) as well as the potential delay in getting paid on this job. I shall also exclude costs of living, simply because they are nobody else’s concern but our own. But they do not, in themselves, represent anything to trade, which our customer should pay for. I shall leave aside any formal qualification and certification costs, which are our speculative investment, our competitive advantage, or our right-to-bid prerequisite. Without due proficiency, lookup time and translation time goes up. Without a CAT tool, without dictation, effort cost are higher. The two above mentioned costs trade off against each other. We want to recover something towards these costs, over time. Not to be forgotten are the costs of relevant education, experience, know-how acquired. This includes the costs of a suitable computer-assisted translation environment (CAT tool). involving the overheads and investments related to minimizing effort. Secondly, there are other, feasibility costs. There are volume-related and time-related aspects (deadlines to meet, the pace required). There are also issues of formatting, OCR legibility, looking up specialist terminology, etc. The translation process involves some elements of drudgery, most notably the typing. For both the professional translator and the customer there are costs to consider:įirstly, for the translator there are the effort costs. ![]() However, there's really not much to the movie beyond being a shocking little short film. It's one of those movies you show people to gross them out, and for that it definitely is a winner. Fans of blood and guts will get what they came for, but anyone expecting much more will be disappointed, for there's very little else to be found within its 30-odd minute runtime. Shot with no dialogue, it does manage to create an eerie atmosphere using only music and expressions, and contrasts the main characters filthy world of his perversions with that of his squeaky clean home life. Aftermath is a brief, unsatisfying glimpse into the life of a necrophiliac who indulges in his habit while going about his business at the morgue. It exposes a world of dirty secrets, far from the glimpse of civilization where as an individual he who commits these atrocities feels the greatest pleasure knowing he is the only one who knows about it.ĭespite what society tries to make of us, we are all animals underneath.Ī short film that is worryingly reminiscent of Nekromantik, though with significantly better production qualities, but still without any involving storylines or engaging characters. This film is probably the most "honest" piece of work I've ever seen, very few directors would have the nerve to produce something like this. It's a sick concept with a sick character, but it truly reveals what humans are capable of once they abandon dignity. You'd be foolish to think most people haven't imagined doing something like this. After he finishes with her body, he takes her heart home and feeds it to his dog. He yells in ecstasy, although it kind of felt overdone. Eventually, he mounts the table and penetrates her lifeless body. It's like he's "stealing" the lust that should've been shared with someone else. The pleasure he derives from it is also uncomfortably intense. He does this so casually, as if he's done it before. He strips off her bra and panties, and runs his blade up and down her chest, before stabbing her in the vagina. Once the other worker leaves, he locks himself in and with a fresh new body, that of a young woman named Marta, he slowly becomes aroused. His heavy breathing, sluggish movements and intense focus on touching the corpses already give away that he's going to do something incredibly sinister. The mortician, who is clearly a sociopathic narcissist, indulges himself too much in his work from the beginning and it's clear to both the orderly and his fellow coroner, that there's something wrong with him. The necrophilia was violent and brutal, but this movie doesn't try to hide how nasty these incidents are. The music choice was indeed haunting, but if you solely listened to the soundtracks used by themselves, you would've guessed this is some classical documentary on space discoveries. The atmosphere created by the editing made me feel like I was watching a soap opera rather than a mortician hacking into a cadaver. But it seemed very out of place for such a low-rate movie. It shows Nacho Cerda is an extremely gifted director. The cinematography and special effects were outstanding. The blood isn't really shocking, because it's what you expect to see when you cut into a body. There's nothing scary or frightening about it, and the "disgusting" aspect of it isn't really over-the-top at all considering there was no more blood present then there would typically be during an autopsy. "Horror" isn't exactly the best-fitting word for Aftermath. Anyone who willingly watches this film already knows what they're getting into, due to the brutally direct publicity. This movie's premise is definitely disturbing and ample to shock even the most seasoned gorehounds. Aftermath is a short gory Spanish film highlighting the actions of a morgue worker who mutilates and rapes a female corpse under his knife. The Xanadu Gun is 34.7 cm in length and weighs 6.2 kg. However, only the Xanadu gun contains an inscription bearing a date of production, so it is considered the earliest confirmed extant cannon. The primary extant specimens of cannon from the 13th century are the Wuwei Bronze Cannon dated to 1227, the Heilongjiang hand cannon dated to 1288, and the Xanadu Gun dated to 1298. The earliest known depiction of a cannon is a sculpture from the Dazu Rock Carvings in Sichuan dated to 1128, however, the earliest archaeological samples and textual accounts do not appear until the 13th century. Co-viative projectiles such as iron scraps or porcelain shards were placed in fire lance barrels at some point, and eventually, the paper and bamboo materials of fire lance barrels were replaced by metal. The cannon may have appeared as early as the 12th century in China, and was probably a parallel development or evolution of the fire-lance, a short ranged anti-personnel weapon combining a gunpowder-filled tube and a polearm of some sort. History Ī bronze "thousand ball thunder cannon" from the Huolongjing. Both of the plural forms cannons and cannon are correct. The word has been used to refer to a gun since 1326 in Italy, and 1418 in England. The word 'cannon' is derived from the Old Italian word cannone, meaning "large tube", which came from Latin canna, in turn originating from the Greek κάννα ( kanna), "reed", and then generalised to mean any hollow tube-like object cognate with Akkadian qanu(m) and Hebrew qāneh, "tube, reed". This classic European cannon design stayed relatively consistent in form with minor changes until the 1750s. European cannons reached their longer, lighter, more accurate, and more efficient "classic form" around 1480. Cannons as field artillery became more important after 1453, with the introduction of limber, which greatly improved cannon maneuverability and mobility. In 1464 a 16,000 kg (35,000 lb) cannon known as the Great Turkish Bombard was created in the Ottoman Empire. Cannons featured prominently as siege weapons, and ever larger pieces appeared. Cannons were used primarily as anti-infantry weapons until around 1374, when large cannons were recorded to have breached walls for the first time in Europe. By the end of the 14th century, cannons were widespread throughout Eurasia. They subsequently spread to India, their usage on the subcontinent being first attested to in 1366. Recorded usage of cannon began appearing almost immediately after. ![]() By the early 14th century, possible mentions of cannon had appeared in the Middle East and the depiction of one in Europe by 1326. ![]() ![]() In 1288 Yuan dynasty troops are recorded to have used hand cannon in combat, and the earliest extant cannon bearing a date of production comes from the same period. The earliest known depiction of cannons appeared in Song dynasty China as early as the 12th century however, solid archaeological and documentary evidence of cannons do not appear until the 13th century. In the modern era, the term cannon has fallen into decline, replaced by guns or artillery, if not a more specific term such as howitzer or mortar, except for high-caliber automatic weapons firing bigger rounds than machine guns, called autocannons. The word cannon is derived from several languages, in which the original definition can usually be translated as tube, cane, or reed. A cannon is a type of heavy artillery weapon. Cannons vary in gauge, effective range, mobility, rate of fire, angle of fire and firepower different forms of cannon combine and balance these attributes in varying degrees, depending on their intended use on the battlefield.
